How to change abs ring on gen 3

Post by jpbroad1970 » Wed Oct 24, 2012 1:29 pm

my abs and traction control light was on so i thought after looking on tinterweb and talking to people on here my abs rings were at fault

2 versions same result

dupleman gave me a quick guide as below
1. Loosen the nut holding the drive shaft.
2. Raise the car and remove the wheel.
3. Loosen the tie rod end from the hub.
4. Remove the screw that attaches the brake hose to the shock absorber.
5. Tap (or press) on the outer end of the drive shaft to make sure it is loose.
6. Remove the two bolts connecting the shock absorber to the hub.
7. Remove the old ABS ring. (Use violence if needed - probably it will just fall off).
8. Clean the area where the ABS ring was located until it is shiny.
9. Heat up the new ring (hot air gun recommended) and gently tap it into location. As soon as it cools down it will stay in place.
10. Put everything back in reversed order.
Make sure you tighten everything properly

but this is what i did (alot of the stages were the same)
i did mine this way as i took the opportunity to do discs and pads at the same time
1. Loosen the nut holding the drive shaft.
2. Raise the car and remove the wheel.
3. Loosen the tie rod end and remove from the hub.
4. undo the caliper slide bracket bolts and remove
5. move caliper and cable tie to spring
6. Remove lower ball joint nut and seperate from suspension
7. you now have a movable suspension leg pull it forward off the driveshaft spline
8. you now have access to the abs ring
9. the one on mine that had a crack just pretty much fell off the otherside i just attacked with a dremmel put a groove in the tapped off
10. once off a good clean with the dremmel until the area where the abs ring fits is clean
11. to fit the ring
METHOD1 Heat up the new ring (hot air gun recommended) and gently tap it into location. As soon as it cools down it will stay in place.
METHOD 2 place the ring on the cv joint and use one of the old rings to tap it on so as not to damage the new ring
Both workded for me
12. Put everything back in reversed order.Make sure you tighten everything properly
sorry i didnt think of doing pics but im sure you will get the gist
thanks to Dupleman for his advice as it helped get me into it
its not as daunting as you think just a bit time consuming
it took me 4 hours on my drive to do both rings and front discs and pads so not the end of the world

hope this helps someone any questions feel free
cheers
John

That's not bad at all considering the amount of work involved :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks for a guide. I guess the procedure is similar on gen 2.

Now I know what to expect from the shop. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
