Aircon compressor dying

#1

Post by Nyx1962 »

Hi folks,

Been a while since I last posted on the forums!

Seems my compressor is dying judging by the noise it’s making and the smell in the cab. Smelt of oil first and then a burnt smell. My question is how easy are they to change and anyone any idea of average cost? ugh i’ll Have to get it regassed too.

Nyx.

You will have to get a garage to change it over for you.
It is illegal to open an aircon system and knowingly discharge the gas, which you would have to do to repalce any part of it.

What you can do if you dont use the A/c is cut the belt. I had mine like that for 3 years when the compressor seized. Later I replaced the compressor and condensor myself but the system was already empty (hence why it seized). Means no A/c but free and gets you out of trouble till it's fixed. Note hwoever that to replace that belt, or indeed the compressor you would have to remove/replace all belts.

You can pull the compressor out from the top of the engine bay if you are at the scrappy, cost abour £30-50 2nd hand. £400+ from Hyundai

Thanks Lexo.

If I leave the aircon off, the cars fine and drives normally. So in the mean time I'd guess I can pull the relay that switches it.

Cheers,
