Hello all

Thank you for letting me join the club!

Some background on me

I'm based in Birmingham at the moment and a Science teacher by trade. I didn't learn to drive until recently due to various reasons but having finally sorting them decided my first car should be something an older car that could be reasonable on petrol, able to carry luggage and such for visiting family but also could be an engaging drive, and had some character, but would also be reasonable on insurance. After much research, decided it had to be a 2.0 lt coupe!

So anyway 2 weeks ago, after seeing a few candidates bought on an 04 2.0 SE that had done 77k miles. It had a few dings and some scratches that have been fixed up with a touch up pen but mechanically seemed sound wit the engine sounding good, the oil being a reasonable colour and a partial service history (wit the owner self maintaining over the last 4 years). Anyway negotiated a cambelt change as there was no record of any change but was too nervous to drive it back myself as the clutch pedal bite being high compared to the fiesta i learnt in Lol!

I've been driving around for a week or two and am really liking it but still getting over the new driver nerves but will be taking it on the motorway to Manchester in the holidays (so doing Pass plus first!)

First issue I had was I realised the windscreen washer jets didn't work (despite the MOT having no advisories) and after a bit of research and some inventive use of an LED worklight diagnosed a faulty washer pump )though the electric connectors had been bodged at some point). Managed to replace with a new one from e-bay for £20!

I then replaced the wipers with Bosch Aerotwins retrofit as I don't want to be distracted by a smeared windscreen.

I've been looking at what else I might need to change. The clutch was done in 09 so I figure the gearbox oil will be ok but the service history says nothing about new spark plugs and while the air filter has been changed every year and looks clean the pollen filter was a horror. I need to get the tools to check it first though!

From what i can tell these re hard to get online as the part i need is 97133-2D900 which going by the old one is 230 x 230 x 30 mm ish. Loads of filters online say they are compatible but seem to be the wrong size. For now I'v e put the old one back in but had t duct tape the edges as the folds were coming away from the sides etc so need to change it asap and so have turned the fans down to 0 for now.

The other thing that stands out is the the old owner changed the oil every year but used 15w40 whereas I've read that you should only use 10w40 so I guess this needs changing. Part of me wants to do this myself but I rent a place at the moment so not sure if it worth buying the jacks and axle and stands to do it.

I'm also thinking of looking at disc and pads as although they work ok there is some rust on the discs although not much pitting as they are apparently 3 years old. Still not decided whether I should just take it down to a garage to do it for me (especially as there is the renowned tiburonautomotive nearby!)

So all in all, the coupe has given me a memorable first car and already has got me curious about how it all works and wanting to learn basic maintenance

Hope to discuss further as 'm sure i'll be tempted to tinker over the summer!

Mark
