New coupe owner in Stoke

#1

Post by Virre »

Hi, after a long mental tustle between buying a 2.7 v6 and a celica, I have just bought my first coupe. It's an absolute joy to drive, body work is a bit rough around the edges but a good weekends worth of t-cut and polish and it should come up a treat. If anyone can offer any advice on how best to look after my engine it would be a big help. Only thing I need to do as a priority is change the fan belt. Is this an easy diy job or am I best taking it to a garage? Cheers all

Hello and :text-welcomewave: to the forum

Don't think they have fan belts on the V6 though :confusion-shrug:  :laughing-rollingyellow:

Just make sure the cam belt had been done and just keep an eye on the oil as coupe don't like running low

Oh and don't use t-cut as it's to coarse I would use say autoglyms paint restorer/scratch remover or some G3 stuff

I take it it's a timing belt then lol, it's sqeels like a pig so I'm guessing it's time for a new one. Is it a big job?

I think they actually use chains in the V6 - the squealing will likely be an Alternator, AC or PAS belt that's loose or otherwise badly fitting.

It's the belt on the drivers side of the engine. I know it's definitely this because when I spray it with sqeek stop, it purrs like a cat and stops any sqeeling.

:text-welcomewave: As above :handgestures-thumbupleft: It'll be the alternator or PAS belt needs replacing or adjusting. The cam belt won't squeal as its toothed

Just been to start it and there's not enough power in the battery so looks like either the battery is knackered or the alternator is shot, and that would half explain the sqeeling belt if it's the alternator one.

Sounds like there isn't enough amps in the battery to start it. You will need a new battery. As for the squealing as said above it will be the PAS belt. Does it go away after its warm? If you turn the steering from left to right does it get worst? It could even be a tensioner that is squealing. Make sure you change the oil every 5-6000 miles, when you switch it on don't Rev it at all, just let it rock over for a minute or 2, then slightly Rev it to increases the oil pressure around the engine.

Welcome to the club mate and welcome to the V6 crowd

I just replaced my battery a couple of weeks ago. Got one from europarts and it's been really good so far, no problems.
Hopefully my phone will allow me to correctly post the link below........
http://www.eurocarparts.com/mobile/ecp/ ... 3b2&000020
If this link doesn't work look for this:
Part No.: 444770276
I decided on this as it had the best cold cranking amp rating, which means on the frozen mornings you shouldn't have any problems.
Good luck.

Thanks for all your advice guys, really appreciate it. I think a new battery wouldn't be a bad idea anyway so that's first on my shopping list. Then I need to find a good local garage to investigate/change the belt and give her a good service. Is there anyone on here local to me ( Stoke on Trent ) who you would recommend?

Don't know any where up by Stoke, but I've been using a coupe specialist in Birmingham to do work on mine recently. He's been really good and helpful the couple of times I've had to use him (fluids change / cam belt / clutch and fly wheel replacement) I can pass the details if you need them.

Yes please do mate, I would prefer a specialist rather than your everyday garage. Cheers
