Hello from Scotland

#1

Post by ZoeP » Thu Jan 05, 2017 6:37 pm

Hi folks,

Just picked up an 09 TSiii in very nice shape but it needs a modification already - I am too short to reach the tailgate when it's fully open... advice gratefully received!

First time I've had one and really enjoying it so far; the only thing I've done is pulled the headlights out to swap the bulbs to some longer range ones (existing ones were awful) but everything else is stock, including that dreadful VDO stereo. That's next on my hit list, as is fitting a Steelmate TPMS as I have horrible, horrible luck with tyres.

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hugs from sunny Scotland.

Hi Zoe, welcome to the club !

Tyre wise the popular choice without breaking the bank is usually Falken or Kumoh. Black circles usually has them around £70 a corner.

For VDO stereo replacement ideas you could have a look through my diary: diaries-the-complete-car-build-story-fr ... 3-450.html I've replaced mine with a tablet to use as a jukebox.

Tailgate, possibly shorter struts althouhg nothing i've ever looked into.

Where about in Scotland are you? We have most members in the central belt, I'm in Edinburgh.

Thanks for the welcome!

Central belt as well - I'm just outside Lanark in the Clyde Valley looking down over the river. I've just finished a seven year university degree so you can imagine the debt I'm in. Sigh. Still, I'm told it will pay off in the future (hah!) but until then I'm on a limited budget for everything. What I do know is I don't think I could have bought anything more spannerable, fun or reliable for the money.

Thanks to my father who roped me in on every job he did on his cars from when I could walk, I'm reasonably competent with a toolkit and a multimeter but 'reasonably' is about as far as it goes!

I'm a bit loathe to start chopping into any car and doing anything non-reversable (I'm not really Fast & Furious material, sadly) so the low-tech solution of a caravan step for the tailgate might have to do. This was offered as a joke. I was considering a punch! Now I'm considering actually throwing one into the boot...

I had never heard of Black Circles before; now I know where I'm getting my tyres from. The Steelmate TPMS are very unobtrusive - they slot into the cigarette lighter, flush, and I'm still going to grab one as I am 100% convinced I have been cursed by the Puncture Gods. Thanks for the web tip - brilliant prices.

the answer to the boot lid problem is simple just fix a strap to the inside of the grab hole of the boot lid :handgestures-thumbupleft:

As I said above that's the quickest solution.
Clyde Valley is lovely. Fantastic roads for a coupe down there :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Remember to stock up on your Avon Skin-So-Soft moisturiser if you're coming to Scotland in the summer and haven't been before.

Locals will know what I'm talking about and anyone who lives in the central or Highland regions of Scotland has probably already lost several pints of blood to the midgies. These things take no prisoners, even people who never get bitten.

Nothing works on them except this moisturiser. Not the Deet sprays, not the military stuff, nothing. No one knows why. It just is the way it is.

Welcome to bonnie Scotland! Looking forward to the meet! :handgestures-thumbupleft:

(Test fitted a handbag strap to the bootlid - annoyingly it would get trapped when the hatch is shut. Need to re-think the engineering on this one!)

Skoda cars come with a rubber strap fixed to the boot lid for pulling it down.
Might be worth searching for that.

I can just about close it if I stretch up, but I end up getting covered in grub which isn't great just before a meeting etc. Ideally, I'd want to be able to pull it down and push on the spoiler to close it without covering my hands, jacket or blouse in road grime so I've got a plan...

One of those neodymium magnets and a VW strap (thanks for the initial hint.) No drilling, no holes, no waterproofing. The VW strap has a steel base to it so I hope this works!
