HCOC The Hyundai Coupe Owners Club ®And Forums

Hello people,

I'm currently a mechanic who specialises in Chrysler PT Cruisers. I'm looking to expand into one more type of car and am looking at Hyundai Coupes. I did some research about them a couple of years ago as I was looking at buying one.

I come from a line of performance cars like Imprezas, RX8s, VXRs and am currently building a Time Attack Competition VXR. There are hundreds of specialists for those cars though. I'm currently 22 years old and have been working with cars since I was 16. Im also based in the East Sussex.

Just wondered if there are many specialists for the coupes? If not, how would you feel going to one? Or do you find going to a normal garage is fine..

I will be able to do work with brakes, suspension, cambelts, tuning work etc. There would obviously be a lot of studying needed on my part first but due to not having massive overheads (working from my 2nd business) then my charged aren't as much as most garages.

Hmm only 1 specialist and hes a fair way away from me...

Been reading up, quite intrigued with the camshafts linked by a chain, is it advised to replace the chains at the same time as the belt?

Probably our biggest area in terms of club members is Kent, so you're definitely in the right sort of area.

I myself prefer specialists as the Hyundai Coupe isn't what I'd call a particularly 'common' car, and it's a bit disconcerting taking it to a garage and the mechanic saying "ooh I've never worked on one of those before".
Although that does have a plus side in that sometimes they underquote you for labour!

I had a big cambelt service that needed to be done and I actually drove all the way up to Tiburon Automotive in Birmingham from Colchester to get it done.
I know of quite a few people on the club who have and will travel hundreds of miles to see Ross at Tiburon Automotive for his expertise.

Ross makes a tonne from club members (you don't need a calculator to figure that out), so another specialist would be welcome - especially one with presence on the forum itself.

nurburg340, what exposure to tuning have you had?

Tuning with regards to bolt on engine parts, as I'm building a track car I have a good understanding (manifolds, better flowing exhaust, forged internals etc) but remapping I have no idea.

I may look into using a company to supply me with remap packages so I can offer that service.

Will also look into LPG Conversion too.

May struggle with that on the Coupe mate. Most of the ECU's are encapsulated to prevent tampering...and they are a learning/adaptive unit so while the like of superchips etc can tinker with it, eventually the unit resets to default. Most tuning on the Coupe is done via a piggyback unit for this reason.

Yes I have just read that lol. So in theory LPG conversions wouldn't work on a coupe without a standard alone ecu as the ecus ignition timing is often altered to runner better amd smoother on gas.. it would then surely just overwrite the alteration?

Yep it is slightly adaptable,it seems enough to handle LPG,the reason nobody goes to Korea for ecu mapping is theirs is a different spate up to ours
